Going to College
Are you thinking about returning to college or enrolling for the first time? If so, you're not alone. Millions of adults who delayed college after high school to pursue work, the military or a family are now enrolling in college — attending full-time or part-time, on campus or off campus, and increasingly through distance education. You can find information about your options at GoHigherKY.org.
Begin college as a freshman
If you finished high school but it has been a while, you may be unsure how to begin your college search. Many colleges have advisers or counselors whose job it is to help nontraditional (or adult) students. Contact an admissions officer at the school of your choice to discuss special services and programs that may exist for adults.
Transfer from one college to another
Kentucky's General Education Transfer Policy guarantees that if a student completes an associate (AA or AS) degree at a KCTCS school, any Kentucky public university will accept the student's general education credits as meeting lower-division general education requirements if the KCTCS transcript is certified. For other transfer policies and transfer frameworks, visit cpe.ky.gov/policies/academicinit/Transfer.
Enroll in distance education courses
You can earn certificates and degrees online through the Kentucky Virtual Campus (KYVC), the state's official virtual campus. The courses and programs are offered by schools in Kentucky and are accessed by logging on to www.kyvu.org. If you register through KYVC, you'll be billed and will make payments to the school that offers those courses. You will receive your certificate or degree from the school that offers the program. KYVC offers online registration; technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; and a call center with evening and Sunday hours.
As a student you may want to take advantage of The Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL). You need a library card from a public Kentucky library to access KYVL's full-text periodicals and electronic databases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information, visit www.kyvl.org.
If you have not yet received your high school diploma or GED, you may want to check out Kentucky Virtual Adult Education (KYVAE). KYVAE provides adult students and educators with online courses, resources and services in an easy-to use and motivational format. The site is dedicated to helping adults achieve their educational goals through improving academic skills and/or earning a GED. All courses are free to Kentucky residents. Visit www.kyvae.org for more information.
